Joe is originally from Lewisporte, NL and graduated from high school there in 1997. After spending a year living in Grand Falls-Windsor completing his first year studies, he moved on to the main campus of Memorial University in St. John's where he lived for three years while completing his B.A. in Psychology along with a Certificate in Criminology. He graduated from memorial University in 2001.
From there he moved on to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB where he completed his L.L.B. after three years, graduating in 2004. At UNB he was a peer mentor for first year students entering the law program.
Joe worked as a summer student at Mills Pittman during the summer of 2003, between his second and third year of law school. He also spent a summer employed with the Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission. Upon his graduation in June, 2004, he returned to Mills Pittman and completed his articles with the firm over the next ten months.
He was called to the bar of Newfoundland and Labrador in April, 2005 and has been working with the firm ever since. He is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as the Canadian Bar Association.
Joe's primary focus areas are criminal law, family law, real estate transactions, personal injury claims, fisheries, and civil litigation but he practices in all areas.
He has appeared in all levels of Court in Newfoundland and Labrador including the Provincial Court, the Supreme Court Trial Division and Family Division, as well as the Court of Appeal. He has also appeared at the Federal Court of Canada and has prepared or assisted in preparing submissions for presentation at the Tax Court of Canada as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. He has participated in mediations, settlement conferences, discoveries, case managements as well as trials in areas such as criminal proceedings, family hearings and civil litigation.
When not at the office, you may find him at his cabin on Lake O'Brien in Central Newfoundland or riding trails all over the island on ATV or snowmobile. He is also a member of the Rod and Gun Club and has been for the past few years.
He currently serves on the board of directors of the Newfoundland Hockey Futures Foundation Inc, which is involved in fundraising and placing talented up and comers in hockey schools throughout the province.
